Error may Quadruple Taxes on Loblaws Property
Cobourg councillors will be asked to quadruple the taxes paid by Loblaws Properties Limited on Strathy Road in Cobourg when they meet in executive committee tonight.
Due to what is described as a "gross or manifest error in assessment," the company paid $203,000 in 2006. That figure should actually be $885,000, according to a memo from the director of the town's corporate services.
The municipality has the right to issue such an increase if the error is due to some reason other than a mistake in judging the assessment of the land. This could be human error such as transposing figures or a typo. The error was made at the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation, according to the memo from treasurer Ian Davey.
The property owner has the right to appeal.
