Thursday September 27, 2007
1:30 p. m.
(South Lawn at Main Entrance)
Purpose/Expectations of the Event:
We are encouraging as many people as possible to join us at Queen’s Park on Thursday September 27, 2007 in order to:
- heighten the awareness of the problems with Market (Current) Value Assessment;
- make everyone aware of how provincial downloading of costs for services, like welfare, roads, court costs etc. to municipalities, is making a huge burden on ratepayers;
- involve the media into helping us make the concerns of this public outcry, real to everyone;
- encourage political candidates into making M.V.A. and Downloading, issues that need addressing during the present campaign and forthcoming election;
- seek out promises from politicians to deal with these issues in a fair manner;
- get commitment from politicians, ratepayer groups and all interested parties to seek a cooperative solution to the growing property taxation issue across the province and its effects on people’s homes.
Rules/ Concerns for Participants
Note: Queen’s Park is very concerned with any protest on their property. They have specific rules and the Legislative Security Service (Officers) that deal with those who cannot follow the rules. Metro Toronto Police will also be available to them (and us) if necessary. Please do your best to present a good image to everyone particularly as the press will likely be in attendance.
Meeting Time:
CNTC‘s Directors will be on site by 12:30 p.m. It is recommended that participants arrive around 1:15 p.m. rain or shine! The rally ends at 4:00 p.m. (See map)
Parking:
There is some parking available (but not much) under the MacDonald Block and east of Queen’s Park Cres., towards Women’s College Hospital. There is no parking on the west side of Queen’s Park Cres.
BEWARE: Around 3:30 p.m. each day, towing of illegally parked cars begins.
TTC: Exit at Queen’s Park Station on the University Line subway.
Location:
Meet on the front lawn of the Provincial Legislature which faces south on University Ave., at the main entrance. We are not allowed in the driveway in front of the Legislature building.
Pickets/Banners:
Pickets and banners are permitted providing they are carried by individuals. You may not dig any poles into the ground or grass.
CNTC recommends you bring signs mounted on light pieces of wood (1”x2”) or strung to hold the sign around your neck/chest, as it can get heavy after a few hours. Any noise makers (bells, whistles, rattles etc.) may be helpful.
Washrooms:
Washrooms are available on the west side at the front of the main building. Signs will not be permitted inside the Legislature with you. Security guards will help you find the washrooms.
Refreshments:
There will not be anywhere to purchase refreshments so please bring a small amount with yourself. Any garbage must be cleaned up. CNTC will try to have green garbage bags available for you.
Podium/P.A.System:
A podium and P.A. System will be available providing it doesn’t rain. A.C. power is also available. Speakers will be invited to address the audience. Paul Hazell will monitor all speakers and their order of speaking to the group at large. Please speak to Paul in advance if you wish to speak to the group.
Identification:
We are hoping to provide a ribbon to all our supporters present in order to identify us. Another ribbon of a different colour will identify marshals/organizers of the event.
Visitors:
Your Directors will be doing their best to alert all the media and any municipal or provincial politicians of this event. We want to portray an image of cooperativeness not controversy. We need the promises of the political candidates to deal with M.V.A. and the downloading after the Election on October 10/07 and then…
. . .WE’LL HOLD THEM TO IT!
Voices:
Be sure to make lots of noise. Shake signs. Bring “noise makers” Encourage all speakers. (No booing of anyone will be permitted). Please treat all participants, visitors or speakers with respect. We will get nowhere if we appear confrontational.
Solicitation:
Participants are not allowed to solicit “passers by” to get literature or participate. Queen’s Park insists that everyone is treated fairly and equally.
Clean Up:
Please do not leave any mess when you leave. CNTC will be charged if work needs to be done at the end of rally.
